Marriage on 100th Birthday
"I love the sparkle in your eyes and the beautiful smile you have when we are together. I want to be by your side to watch you celebrate many more birthdays."
In 1983, friends set Forest Lunsway and Rose Pollard up at a
party, hoping the two would dance together. Forest had been widowed twice. Rose had lost her spouse, due to a long and
painful illness. And she had no interest of remarrying. She just wanted
companionship.
Despite, both living at a distance of 64 kilometers. They
made an effort to meet each other on regular basis. It was a slow courtship. For the next 20
years, Forest would drive the full distance to take Rose on a date and then
drive home afterward that same night.
In 2003, Forest moved in with Rose in Capistrano Beach. Then
he proposed Rose. But Rose didn’t take him seriously. By then Forest was 90 and
Rose was 80. She jokingly agreed to marry him when he turned 100. For Forest it
wasn’t joke, and as his 100th birthday approached. She decided to
take him up on his offer. The couple was married at their local Community
Center on Forest’s 100th Birthday.
