Sadhu Sundar Singh
"Thirst implies the existence of water, hunger of food.Desire of its fulfillment and desire to live forever itself is the evidence of home beyond imagination."
Sundar was born into a Sikh family in the village of Rampur Kataania, Ludhiana
(Punjab state) in northern India.Since his childhood his mother used to take him to Sikh temple. Taught
him to value moral teaching, taught in the temple. Unfortunately, the death of
his mother at the age of fourteen, pitched him into violence and despair. He took out his anger on the missionaries,
persecuted Christian converts, and ridiculed their faith. Once, a copy of New Testament was being
distributed in his school. He tore the Bible and burned in front of his
friends.
Later, he told this incident to his father. In reply, father advice him that he should not have done so.
Instead, asked him to return the Bible, if he didn’t want it. It led
him to think deeply and he felt sorry.
He had strong faith on his religion. He believed only his religion is
the true religion and the God whom he serves is the only living God. Thus, this
is how his journey begins for truth.
One night he was restless, didn’t sleep till late night. It was around
3:00 am, he began to pray to God. Knowing not whom he was praying. He was
expecting to get the glimpse of living God. And also he made an oath that if the living
God didn’t revealed to him. Next day, he would commit suicide by placing his
head on the rail track. After the prayer, he the glimpse of living God. In the
vision, he could see the face of Jesus Christ. On the next morning, he ran to
his father and said this news. And he decided to convert into
Christianity. By hearing this news his
father disagreed and his decision of converting into Christianity. After this he
always had to face problem. His own
brother Rajender Singh poisoned him, he was poisoned number of time. People of
that area threw snakes in his house.
But, his life was saved by the help of a nearby Christian community.
On his sixteenth Birthday, he was Publicly Baptized as a Christian in
the parish church in Simla, in the foothills of Himalaya. He went around place
to place for preaching the gospel of Christ. In October 1906, he set out on his
journey as a new Christian, wearing a turban and the yellow robe of a Hindu
Sadhu.
In 1908, he crossed the frontier of Tibet, where he was appalled by
living conditions. He was stoned as he bathed in cold water because it was
believed that “Holy men never washed.”
Despite of all these, his death is still a mystery. Where he died and
how he died nobody knows. Some believed that his disappeared from the sea
shore.
